Recently Published Battery Standards
Recently UL 62133-2:2020 was published and is harmonized with IEC 62133-2:2017. This standard addresses portable lithium battery applications while UL 62133-1:2020 is for nickel battery application. Currently IEC 62133 is referenced in AAMI ES 60601-1:2005+A1:2012. While the new standard(s) are relevant and needed for Europe and USA medical end product applications that involve batteries, it’s also important to note that for workplace safety, Occupation Safety Health Administration (OSHA) did recently add UL 2054 (UL’s well-known portable battery safety standard) to their national recognized standard list as well as published it in a bulletin this past June 2019 highlighting safety of battery and end product portable/wearable devices.
