Understanding Portable Battery Safety

UL 62133 Family of Standards for Batteries

January 30, 2020

UL 62133-2:2020 - Secondary Cells and Batteries Containing Alkaline or Other Non-Acid Electrolytes - Safety Requirements for Portable Sealed Secondary Cells, and for Batteries Made from Them, for Use in Portable Applications - Part 2: Lithium Systems, was recently published by Underwriters Laboratories, our nonprofit affiliate. It is harmonized with IEC 62133-2:2017. This Standard addresses portable lithium battery applications while UL 62133-1:2020 is for nickel battery application. Currently IEC 62133 is referenced in AAMI ES 60601-1:2005+A1:2012. The new standard(s) are relevant and needed for any Europe and USA medical end-product application. In addition, the U.S. Occupational Safety Health Administration (OSHA) recently added UL 2054 Standard for Household and Commercial Batteries to its Nationally Recognized Testing Program list of appropriate test standards and included it in a June 2019 bulletin that highlighted battery safety and end-product, portable/wearable devices.
