On Dec. 6, 2023, The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) published two new standards for textile products:

  1. ISO 3758:2023 – Care labelling code using symbols
  2. ISO 14184-3:2023 – Determination of formaldehyde: Part 3 – Free and hydrolyzed formaldehyde (extraction method) by liquid chromatography

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has published ISO 3758:2023 – Textiles. This document establishes a system of graphic symbols intended for use in the marking of textile articles and for providing information on the most severe treatments that do not cause irreversible damage to the article during the textile care process, as well as specifies the use of these symbols in care labeling.

This document is applicable to all textile articles, except these products that are excluded due to specific cleaning processes not specified in this document:

  • Non-removable covers of upholstered furniture.
  • Non-removable covers of mattresses.
  • Carpets and rugs that require professional carpet cleaning.

The graphical symbols described in this document are intended to give care information to the end user.

The following domestic treatments are covered:

  • Washing
  • Bleaching
  • Drying
  • Ironing

Professional textile care treatments in dry and wet cleaning, but excluding industrial laundering and professional carpet cleaning, are also covered.

However, it is recognized that information imparted by the domestic symbols will also be of assistance to the professional cleaner and launderer.

Note – Symbols for industrial laundering can be found in ISO 30023.

The main changes are the following:

  • A new symbol has been introduced for wash by hand at ambient temperature.
  • A new symbol has been introduced for ironing without steam.
  • New alternative solvents have been introduced for dry cleaning.
  • Some graphical changes have been introduced to align ISO symbols to the GINETEX ones. The pictograms used are registered trademarks in most countries and are the property of GINETEX, the International Association for Textile Care Labelling.

UL Solutions recommends that manufacturers start to verify their compliance with this document for care instructions, using the established sequence of symbols for the five main treatments: washing, bleaching, drying, ironing and professional textile care.

The experienced global network of UL Solutions experts and laboratories provides label review services and testing in accordance with this new version of ISO 3758.

ISO 14184-3:2023 – Determination of formaldehyde: Part 3 – Free and hydrolyzed formaldehyde (extraction method) by liquid chromatography

We also highlight this new standard that specifies a method for determining the amount of free formaldehyde and formaldehyde extracted partly through hydrolysis utilizing an extraction method. The method can be applied for the testing of textile fibers, fabrics or yarns.
