NORTHBROOK, ILLINOIS — May 15, 2023 — UL Solutions, a global leader in applied safety science, today announced the opening of the Hazardous Locations Personnel Competency Training Center in collaboration with the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) and the Safety and Health Technology Center (SAHTECH) in Hsinchu, Taiwan with instructional sessions beginning on July 6, 2023.

The joint training center will provide safety and health engineering education regarding hazardous locations. As global leaders in applied safety science, technology research, and safety and health engineering, respectively, the three organizations aim to share knowledge and expertise to help prepare the next generation of hazardous locations engineering professionals.

The facility will offer practical courses tailored to industry needs, such as compliance with domestic regulations, the basics of explosion safety, hazardous area classification, and equipment installation and inspection. This comprehensive training program is designed to equip participants with the necessary knowledge and skills to enhance their competency in hazardous locations safety and help them prevent potential accidents.

“Advancing workplace safety in hazardous locations is at the core of UL Solutions’ mission, working for a safer world. UL Solutions safety science experts offer deep knowledge and technical expertise to help the energy community reduce risk while working in potentially explosive atmospheres,” said Jonathan T.H. Chen, regional vice president, Taiwan, at UL Solutions. “The opening of our joint collaboration center with ITRI and SAHTECH enables us to combine expertise in serving the energy community and international companies in Taiwan.”

“Unsafe behavior in hazardous environments can lead to accidents,” said Yu Rong Bin, general manager at SAHTECH. “Implementing personnel education and training programs to gain sufficient professional knowledge can help mitigate disasters and help protect those who work in such environments.”

“Equipment safety certification has advanced significantly,” said Dr. James Wang, vice president and Green Energy and Environment Research Laboratories general director at ITRI. “In recent years, regulatory authorities have been closely reviewing personnel safety practices, including hazardous locations classification, inspection, maintenance, and equipment installation and selection. Through our new training center, we can help enhance the professional safety skills of personnel through theoretical knowledge and practical exercises.”

In addition to co-hosting the hazardous locations general introduction course with ITRI and SAHTECH, UL Solutions will offer the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) System for Certification to Standards Relating to Equipment for Use in Explosive Atmospheres (IECEx) Scheme for Certification of Personnel Competencies (CoPC) training at the joint facility. The IECEx CoPC Scheme aims to provide cross-industry competence for work associated with equipment for hazardous areas. UL Solutions is approved by IECEx to operate within the CoPC Scheme and issue Certificates of Personnel Competencies.
