CRD to the Standard UL 8750
NORTHBROOK, Ill., July 26, 2013 - UL (Underwriters Laboratories), a global safety science leader, announced today a new service offering for Marking and Certification of LED Drivers Intended for Use in Hazardous (Classified) Locations. HazLoc luminaire manufacturers can save time and expense by choosing a Type HL driver, or a certified driver appearing under the new category code FOHB. UL announces this as a service designed to assist manufacturers in gaining greater market access for LED drivers. These services also assist end-product HazLoc luminaire manufacturers by making it easy to source a compliant LED driver, reducing time to market.

UL established a new "Type HL" designation for LED drivers, patterned after the requirements for Type HL ballasts. These requirements for LED drivers were issued as a Certification Requirement Decision (CRD) to the standard UL 8750, "Light Emitting Diode Equipment for Use in Lighting Products". LED Drivers with the "Type HL" marking can be used in end product luminaires intended to be installed in hazardous (classified) locations areas, without further evaluation. Type HL drivers will be Listed or Recognized, as appropriate, in their regular ordinary location product category. Please visit www.ul.com/standards, for text of the new requirements.
In some cases, LED drivers may not meet the design criteria for the Type HL designation, but may still be safe in Hazardous Locations after an additional engineering investigation. Therefore, a new certification service has been established for the evaluation and Listing of LED drivers under the category FOHB, "Light-emitting-diode Arrays, Modules and Controllers for Use in Hazardous (Classified) Locations". This new category includes LED drivers that may not meet the "Type HL" criteria, and are intended to be used in end product luminaires for use in hazardous (classified) locations.
These two new services, "Type HL" designation and HazLoc Listing Certifications, will preclude the need for a special investigation of these LED drivers when used in a Hazardous Locations luminaire. LED drivers can now be UL Certified and labeled for use in a hazardous (classified) area - expanding your LED driver's end-use applications.
