STP 153 – PORTABLE LUMINAIRES – Three new proposal topics have circulated for STP ballot for UL 1786, the Standard for Direct Plug-In Nightlights. The proposals cover new requirements for portable battery-operated nightlights, and clarification of test wall dimensions and the term, “glowing”, in the clauses covering the blanketing test.

UL 676 – UNDERWATER LUMINAIRES AND SUBMERSIBLE JUNCTION BOXES – The following proposal topics were balloted, and maintained consensus through recirculation. The associated changes were published in the Standard on October 22, 2019.

1. Scope clarifications for nonmetallic forming shells and junction boxes

2. Lens guards

3. Installation instructions related to flexible cords

4. Electric shock test luminaire constant (N)

5. Gasket testing

6. Submersible luminaires applicable clauses from part I

7. Cycling under water test

8. Number of required grounding connections for submersible junction boxes

9. Editorial corrections and adjustments

UL 1598 – LUMINAIRES (TRI-NATIONAL STANDARD) – The proposed new (fifth) edition of UL 1598 was circulated for STP preliminary review with a closing date for comments of August 23, 2019. Comments received are currently under review by the THC, in preparation for STP ballot. The THC met October 29, 2019.

UL 1993 – SELF-BALLASTED LAMPS AND LAMP ADAPTERS – A series of 18 proposals were circulated for STP ballot, with ballots and comments due October 23, 2019. With the exception of three proposals, all have reached consensus, and will move to the next steps in the process: comment resolution and recirculation as appropriate.

UL 8750 – LIGHT EMITTING DIODE (LED) EQUIPMENT FOR USE IN LIGHTING PRODUCTS – A 10 topic proposal was circulated for ballot Q2 2019. Consensus was reached on all topics, with a recirculation of several topics required. The recirculation phase closed August 26, 2019, with the final result being that with the exception of topic 5, all changes associated with the following topics were published October 11:

1. Required spacings for wiring terminals

2. New Supplement for Type IC LED drivers

3. Special Use LED arrays

4. LVLE circuits

5. Temperature Coded LED arrays

6. Grounding and bonding

7. Class 2 circuits

8. Output loading - Output short circuit

9. Markings and product specification sheet

10. Supplement SG - Temperature value at TC point

Topic 5 remains outstanding, and is undergoing post ballot comment resolution. A separate set of two new proposals, including a correction to a reference in Table 7.6, and a new supplement SF covering LED equipment with wired control units, were circulated for STP preliminary review with comments due October 21, 2019. Comments were received, and are under consideration.
