UL’s newly upgraded testing facility in India can be used for testing rated short-circuit capacity up to 15 kiloamperes (kA) at 415 volts. This testing facility undertakes short-circuit tests for development, testing and certification of low-voltage switchgear and control gear, exclusively for modular circuit breakers (MCBs), residual current circuit breakers (RCCBs) and residual current circuit breakers with overcurrent protection (RCBOs) to applicable IS/IEC standards.

Equipped with modern digital measuring and recording systems, the test laboratory can make high-current measurements using Rogowski coils and voltage measurements made using resistive or capacitive voltage dividers or potential transformers (PTs). Our digital transient recorder with associated customized data acquisition software enables quick and detailed processing of test data and test report preparation.

A current development for short-circuit capacity

Previously, most of the MCBs were tested or rated up to 10 kA short-circuit capacity. However, there has been an ever-increasing demand for electrical power, leading to increases in both consumption and distribution. Short-circuit current protection levels needed to adapt to the growing increase for capacity of power systems. This resulted in an increase in product demand for products designed and tested as rated for short-circuit breakers with capacities higher than 10 kA.

As power demand increased, a limited number of testing laboratories were able to test in accordance with IS/IEC 60898 with enhanced short-circuit capability to the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) IEC Certification Body (CB) testing requirements. Our laboratory offers comprehensive testing for both development and certification to both BIS and IEC CB testing requirements.

Why UL

UL’s facility in India is currently the only Certified Body Test Laboratory (CBTL) in the country for the following products:

  • MCBs to IEC 60898
  • RCCBs to IEC 61008
  • RCBOs to IEC 61009

Our IEC CB scheme and testing enables manufacturers in India and around the world to gain global market access. Our expertise can help streamline the process of obtaining  international certifications such as IEC CB certificates, UL D Mark, UL EU Mark and the UL LVD TEC Certificate.

BIS

MCBs, RCCBs and RCBOs require BIS testing and approval as applicable when sold or marketed in India. UL’s laboratory in India has been accredited as a BIS test laboratory for products under applicable BIS standards. Our comprehensive service solution for BIS testing and international certifications can help reduce costs and increase market access. Our global presence and highly skilled engineering staff enable us to offer quick project turnarounds for BIS testing and testing to international certifications.

Whether it’s testing to national standards or certification testing to access international markets, UL can help you access your target markets quickly and efficiently.
