Overview

Protective coatings are covered under the following categories and corresponding category control numbers (CCNs) based on the type of coating and end-use application.

Coatings, Organic, for Steel Enclosures of Outdoor-use Electrical Equipment (DTOV2) – covers organic coatings, e.g., paints, enamels, lacquers and varnishes, intended for use as protection against atmospheric corrosion of steel enclosures in outdoor-use environments. The basic standard used to investigate products in this category is ANSI/UL 1332, the Standard for Organic Coatings for Steel Enclosures for Outdoor Use Electrical Equipment.

Coatings, Metallic (DTHW2) – covers metallic coatings, e.g., zinc, zinc-iron, aluminum-zinc, zinc-aluminum-magnesium and zinc-nickel alloy, and the steel substrates to which they are applied. The basic standard used to investigate products in this category is ASTM A653/A653M, Standard Specification for Steel Sheet, Zinc-Coated (galvanized) or Zinc-Iron Alloy-Coated (galvannealed) by the Hot-Dip Process. Additional standards may be used to investigate other metallic coating types/designations if found appropriate. 

Coatings, Organic, for Use on Metal-enclosed Switchgear Assemblies (DTZI2) – covers organic coatings intended for use as protection against corrosion of metal-enclosed, low-voltage-power circuit-breaker switchgears. The corrosion protection/coating (paint) qualification test requirements for these assemblies are outlined in UL 1558, the Standard for Metal-Enclosed Low-Voltage Power Circuit Breaker Switchgear, and ANSI/IEEE C37.20.1, IEEE Standard for Metal-Enclosed Low-Voltage Power Circuit Breaker Switchgear.
