Protective Coatings Testing and Certification

Our program evaluates organic and metallic corrosion protection coatings to be certified as UL Recognized Components. Having your products Recognized and published in UL Product iQ® makes them easily searchable — giving you a leg up on the competition.

Certify your protective coatings as UL Recognized Components

Our certification program for protective coatings covers test procedures and performance criteria for the evaluation of organic and metallic corrosion protection coatings of steel enclosures.

Protective coatings that meet our requirements are certified as UL Recognized Components and are published in our UL Product iQ Database.

Product categories and Standards

Protective coatings certified under UL Solutions' component certification program are covered under four different categories and corresponding category code numbers (CCNs) based on the type of coating and end-use application.

Coatings, Organic, for Steel Enclosures of Outdoor-use Electrical Equipment – Component

This category covers organic coatings, e.g., powder coats, paints, and enamels, intended for use as protection against atmospheric corrosion of steel enclosures. The basic standard used to investigate products in this category is ANSI/UL 1332, the Standard for Organic Coatings for Steel Enclosures for Outdoor Use Electrical Equipment. Depending on a product’s intended usage, the testing may consist of a salt-spray (fog) test, moist carbon dioxide-sulfur dioxide-air test and/or a light and water test for clear coatings.

Standard

ANSI/UL 1332

Category Code Number (CCN)

DTOV2

Coatings, Metallic – Component

Metallic coatings are zinc, zinc-iron, aluminum-zinc, zinc-aluminum-magnesium and zinc-nickel alloy, and the steel substrates to which they are applied. These coatings are intended to be applied to exterior and interior surfaces of steel enclosures of outdoor-use electrical equipment to protect the metal against atmospheric corrosion. The basic standard used to investigate products in this category is ASTM A653/A653M, Standard Specification for Steel Sheet, Zinc-Coated (galvanized) or Zinc-Iron Alloy-Coated (galvannealed) by the Hot-Dip Process. Additional standards may be used to investigate other metallic coating types/designations if found appropriate. Testing typically consists of coating weight and coating bend tests per the applicable standard.

Applied Coatings, Organic, for Steel Enclosures of Outdoor-use Electrical Equipment – Component

Traceability of the coating material and verification of the application process for Recognized Component organic coating systems fall under this category. This program is intended to provide quick verification of the protective coatings that are applied at off-site locations and intended for use with end-products. The Protective Coating Parts Traceability program creates value for end-product manufacturers by ensuring that the component specifications are not compromised and continue to meet our requirements.

Coatings, Organic, for Use on Metal-enclosed Switchgear Assemblies – Component

This category covers organic coatings intended for use as protection against corrosion of metal-enclosed, low-voltage-power circuit-breaker switchgears. The corrosion protection/coating (paint) qualification test requirements for these assemblies are outlined in UL 1558, the Standard for Metal-Enclosed Low-Voltage Power Circuit Breaker Switchgear, and ANSI/IEEE C37.20.1, IEEE Standard for Metal-Enclosed Low-Voltage Power Circuit Breaker Switchgear.

Conditions of Acceptability

Guidelines addressing the suitability of protective coatings when used with an end product are included in the UL Solutions report under Conditions of Acceptability. The Conditions of Acceptability generally cover guidelines for use of the product.

UL Solutions Follow-Up Services

All recognized component protective coatings fall under UL Solutions Follow-Up Services program, which states that UL Certified products must continue to be manufactured in compliance with UL Solutions requirements.

Benefits of our protective coatings testing and certification services

We are uniquely positioned to provide a comprehensive view of how products function within a given system. This is particularly critical in the plastics and components industry, as interactions between substances, parts, systems and the environment can cause a significant number of hazards. These failures are rarely apparent when components are tested individually.

Our technical experts can also help you align your products to the appropriate UL Certification category and applicable Standards. This enables manufacturers of UL Certified products to easily source components that demonstrably meet their compliance needs and project specifications.

Our trustworthy reputation provides an important product differentiator in a crowded marketplace, communicating safety and quality to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), purchasers and regulatory authorities.

Choose UL Solutions to test and certify your protective coatings

UL Solutions' comprehensive testing, certification, assessment and regulatory compliance services are designed to foster innovation, enhance product and process quality, enable safety and, ultimately, help our customers meet their business goals.

Our broad capabilities enable us to help you address a wide variety of key business needs that may arise throughout your product development life cycle and deployment phase. Working with one provider allows you to take advantage of our cost- and time-saving service bundles, and our integrated testing and certification plans help you to achieve your go-to-market plans in a timely manner.
