Offshore wind distinguishes itself from conventional renewable energy sources in many ways and will be an important driver of the global energy transition in the coming decades. As a highly scalable renewable energy technology, offshore wind can generate large-scale volumes of low-carbon electricity at competitive cost. Average capacity factors are more than 40%, making offshore wind far more predictable than other renewable energy sources. This scalability, predictability and flexibility combine to create an optimal source of operating reserve, which will be needed to stabilize and decarbonize Australia’s electricity system.
According to an assessment by the Blue Economy Cooperative Research Center, Australia’s coastlines offer nearly 2,500 GW, or approximately 7,900 terawatt-hours, per year of technically available wind resources in its most exclusive economic zones. The latest bill to pass in the Australian Parliament now paves the way for many new projects, and deploying future investments requires careful planning and detailed technical studies and expertise.
