Certification Services for Capacitor Products and Systems

Delivering the right capacitor solution for products and systems with options for distinct levels of certification.

Aluminum can type film capacitors

Overview

Capacitors are energy-storing devices that are widely used in electronic equipment.  With the rising demand for electricity including electricity from renewable energy sources has placed a higher demand on the current power generation infrastructure and its manufacturers.  Through capacitor certification services, we can help deliver the right capacitor solution for products and systems with options for distinct levels of certification.  These options allow end-product manufacturers and integrators to strategically choose the most effective solution to meet the most demanding requirements for cost and performance to enter the markets.

Our capacitor certification services cover integral protection capacitors with either segmented film or expansion-type protection, which are intended for use with products such as:

  • Appliances
  • Lighting equipment
  • Air conditioning and refrigeration equipment
  • Motors
  • Electrolytic capacitors for motor start or similar applications
  • DC power capacitors with or without integral protection intended for use in DC power electronic applications such as switching circuits, DC filtering and renewable energy systems

Services

Capacitors are evaluated to the following Standards for compliance and safety:

  • U.S. — UL 810 the Standard for Capacitors
  • Canada — CSA C22.2 No. 190
Areas of expertise

We provide services for the capacitors described above, as well as extensive knowledge in the end-product requirements and help to market with a reduction in product testing for the end-product manufacturer.

Capacitor and capacitor banks
AC With internal protection against fault currents Appliances, lighting equipment, air conditioning, refrigeration equipment, motors, power factor correction ANSI/UL 810 Part I (CYWT2) and CSA C22.2 No. 190 (CYWT8) 5 kV to 2 kV U.S. and Canada
AC Without internal fault current protection Plastic housing or partial metal housings ANSI/UL 810 Part I, (CZDS2) and CSA C22.2 No. 190 (CZDS8) Up to 7.2 kV U.S. and Canada
AC Electrolytic Motor start ANSI/UL 810 Part SA (CZEH2) 600 V or less U.S.
AC Banks Power factor correction units ANSI/UL 810B Part II (CYWT); CSA C22.2 No. 190 (CYWT7) 600 V or less U.S. and Canada
DC With/out internal fault current protection Switching circuits, DC filtering and renewable energy systems ANSI/UL 810B Up to 7.2 kV U.S.

Benefits

A capacitor with UL Certification may allow for:
  • Reduction in product testing for the end-product manufacturer
  • Knowledge of end-product safety criteria
  • Reduction in product costs for end-product manufacturers
  • Increase in available capacitor options
