NORTHBROOK, Ill., Oct. 28, 2008 -- During the recent annual meeting of the International Electrotechnical Commission's (IEC) committee for the IECEx Conformity Assessment Scheme, Kerry McManama, general manager of HazLoc Services at Underwriters Laboratories (UL), was unanimously inducted as Chairman of the Management Committee.

In his role as Chairman of the IECEx Management Committee, McManama will be responsible for guiding the development and maintenance of all programs associated with the conformity assessment of equipment and repair facilities related to explosion protection. Pending approval from the IEC Conformity Assessment Board, the three-year appointment will begin on Jan.1, 2009.

As the global organization that oversees the development of international standards for all electrical, electronic and related technologies, the IEC promotes discussion and cooperation on all issues regarding the standardization and conformity assessment of electrotechnical products. In addition, the IEC facilitates the operation of conformity assessment schemes, such as the IECEx Scheme. The objective of the IECEx Scheme is to facilitate international trade in equipment and services for use in explosive atmospheres, while maintaining the necessary levels of safety.

"Kerry has long been recognized worldwide as a leading hazardous locations expert and has shown a longstanding commitment through many years of active participation in the development, management and operation of IECEx," said Chris Agius, IECEx executive secretary. "Under his leadership, IECEx will continue to demonstrate its unique global standing as the single international conformity assessment system to meet the needs of all stakeholders of the ever-increasing and varied Global Ex industries."

"Kerry's election into the Chair of the IECEx Scheme management committee is a great honor for both Kerry and UL," said Bill Colavecchio, vice president and general manager of the Industrial Products Sector at UL. "Ultimately, it demonstrates not only the respect of his peers, but also his superior level of technical competency, thought leadership and commitment to UL's Mission of Public Safety."

General membership's acceptance of McManama's nomination was unanimous at the annual meeting, held Oct. 2, in Paris, France. More than 100 delegates from 28 participating countries voted, including Australia, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, India, Italy, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Serbia, Romania, Russia, Singapore, Slovenia, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom and the United States.

"I have total confidence in Kerry to continue the progress of an already highly-recognized conformity assessment scheme" said Dr. Uwe Klausmeyer, outgoing chairman of the IECEx Scheme. "His integrity and explosion protection expertise will bring the right tailwind for further development and I know we can look forward to a promising future for the IECEx Scheme."

McManama began his tenure with UL in 1992 as an engineer working in Industrial Control Equipment and managing Hazardous Locations operations. He has served on various IEC technical committees as a United States expert and also as the IEC-SC-31H (Combustible Dusts) Secretary. He was the first U.S. chairman of the USNC/IECEx committee and has been head U.S. delegate to the international IECEx meetings for the last 10 years.
