Requirements for circuit breakers and supplementary protectors

A circuit breaker is a device designed to open and close a circuit by nonautomatic means and to open the circuit automatically on a predetermined overcurrent, without damage to itself when applied within its rating. These devices are designed to provide service-entrance, feeder or branch-circuit protection in accordance with ANSI/NFPA 70, National Electrical Code (NEC).

These critical devices are intended for use with certified enclosures, or as part of other certified equipment, or without enclosures where acceptable. Investigation of a certified replacement circuit breaker involves only the circuit breaker and associated parts. The end application or any series combination application has not been investigated.

A supplementary protector is a manually resettable device designed to open the circuit automatically on a predetermined value of time versus current or voltage within an appliance or other electrical equipment. It is permitted to be provided with manual means for opening or closing the circuit. They are not intended to provide branch circuit overcurrent protection required by ANSI/NFPA 70, NEC.
