Elevator safety certification for systems and components

UL Solutions certifies elevator systems, subsystems and equipment so manufacturers can demonstrate conformance to ASME A17.1/CSA B44 and the National Electrical Code, NFPA 70 Article 620. Our evaluations support elevator safety and market access for standard elevator systems in commercial and residential buildings. Our global team brings electrical, machinery, functional safety and cybersecurity expertise to every project.

What we test and certify

Product categories include elevator control panels, elevator controls and accessories, elevator door‑locking devices and contacts, elevator switches and passenger elevator car enclosures. These offerings span standard applications and specialized needs identified below.

Standards we assess

We conduct certification investigations to ASME A17.1/CSA B44 and NFPA 70 Article 620. In addition to our certification program, we offer an ANSI‑accredited program for performance‑based evaluations under ASME A17.7/CSA B44.7 when designs are not fully specified by ASME A17.1/CSA B44.

Performance‑based certification for innovative designs

When a system or component introduces new technology beyond ASME A17.1/CSA B44, we test to ASME A17.7/CSA B44.7 to assess safety through the performance‑based route. This approach provides a single‑certifier pathway and helps code authorities focus on verifying safe, code‑compliant installation.

ASME A17.7/CSA B44.7 approach

UL Solutions elevator certification program covers elevator and escalator systems, subsystems, components and functions, investigated to A17.7/CSA B44.7 and recognized under the AECO category.

Certificate of Conformance and acceptance

We issue a Certificate of Conformance identifying the manufacturer, scope, certificate number, effective date and critical installation or maintenance conditions. This supports acceptance by code authorities during the approval process.

Hazardous locations support

For equipment intended for or relating to hazardous locations, UL Solutions provides specialized testing, certification and advisory services that help manufacturers navigate complex HazLoc requirements alongside elevator applications.

Plan your path to compliance

Design development and evaluation

Engaging UL Solutions early can help identify the right certification route—prescriptive to A17.1/CSA B44 or performance‑based to A17.7/CSA B44.7—reducing redesign and time to market. Our certification services span products, components and full systems.

Frequently asked questions

UL Solutions investigates elevator systems and equipment to ASME A17.1/CSA B44 and NFPA 70 Article 620. For innovative designs or where prescriptive code does not fully apply, UL Solutions evaluates to ASME A17.7/CSA B44.7 under its ANSI‑accredited program.

It is a process to demonstrate safety through performance‑based criteria rather than prescriptive rules. UL Solutions Elevator and Escalator Systems, Subsystems, Components and Functions product category (AECO) certifies systems, subsystems, components and functions to A17.7/CSA B44.7 and issues a Certificate of Conformance to support code authority acceptance.

UL Solutions supports customers with technical training, workshops and advisory services that complement testing and certification, helping teams understand requirements and prepare submissions.

Examples include elevator control panels, door‑locking devices and contacts, switches, and passenger elevator car enclosures, including options for hazardous locations. Consult Product iQ® for specific listings and conditions of acceptability.

A UL Certificate of Conformance documents conformance to ASME A17.7/CSA B44.7 and outlines conditions for installation or maintenance, enabling authorities to focus on verifying safe, code‑compliant installation in the field.
