Overview of the European Office Furniture Federation (FEMB) level certification
FEMB has launched a multi-attribute sustainability program for office and non-domestic furniture for indoor use in Europe. Similar to the Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association (BIFMA) LEVEL® Certification program, Europe’s level certification evaluates the environmental and social sustainability of office and non-domestic furniture products, tailored to the European market.
Manufacturers must work with an authorized, independent third-party certification body to perform the assessment. The third-party certifier evaluates the product, the facility or facilities that produced it and the organization itself to sustainability criteria in the four impact areas: materials, energy and atmosphere, human and ecosystem health and social responsibility.
UL is an accredited third-party certification body for FEMB level certification. Companies that do not use authorized third-party certifiers are not eligible to use the certification mark. Find information about the FEMB Sustainability Standard on the level certified website.
How to achieve FEMB level certification
To achieve certification, the product, the facility or facilities that produced it, and the organization itself, must meet sustainability criteria in the four impact areas: materials, energy and atmosphere, human and ecosystem health and social responsibility. UL evaluates all parts of the office furniture supply chain to verify compliance with the criteria.
To achieve certification, products must meet minimum performance against prerequisites in each impact area plus optional additional credits available in each area to obtain a higher level of certification. After UL verifies compliance, we issue FEMB level certification.
The total number of points that a product achieves will result in certification at one of the three levels:
- level 1 – 32—44 points
- level 2 – 45—62 points
- level 3 – 63—94 points
Benefits of FEMB level certification
Level Certification benefits both manufacturers and end users by helping to simplify decision making and sustainable product selection. Europe has multiple office furniture sustainability standards, which can be costly for manufacturers looking to enter multiple markets, and confusing for end users selecting and comparing products.
While level certification will not replace national schemes, it establishes a common European path and methodology to demonstrate the environmental characteristics of a product in a common way. This benefits end users by making comparisons easier.
