What is the UL Type Examination Certification?

The UL Type Examination Certification is a voluntary certification scheme for hydrogen components. It indicates that a product has been tested and found to comply with the standard(s) listed on the UL Type Examination Certificate, issued after the product investigation.

UL Type Examination Certification includes:

  • Technical documentation review
  • Laboratory and performance testing
  • Certification upon successful evaluation outcomes

 

 

ISO 19880-3 and ISO 19880-5 certification

We currently offer certificates for the following standards:

  • ISO 19880-3:2018 Gaseous hydrogen — fueling stations — Part 3: Valves. This defines the safety and performance requirements for high-pressure gas valves used in hydrogen fueling stations, including:

    • Check valves
    • Excess flow valves
    • Flow control valves
    • Manual valves
    • Shut-off valves
    • Pressure safety valves
    • Hose breakaway devices
  • ISO 19880-5:2025 (Gaseous hydrogen — fueling stations — Part 5: Dispenser hoses and hose assemblies. This specifies the design, material, and testing standards for hydrogen dispenser hoses and hose assemblies used to deliver hydrogen at pressures up to 70 MPa.

Certification requirements

To qualify for the UL Type Examination Certification scheme, your products must be evaluated to applicable international and European standards for electrical safety, explosion safety, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), performance or similar requirements. These standards contain clearly defined pass/fail criteria for the products within their scope.

Standards other than international (IEC/ISO) and European (EN), such as National Standards based on IEC standards or other standards, may also be suitable for the UL Type Examination Certificate.

Both end products and components are eligible for certification.
