The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has carried out a review of recent scientific developments to be considered for an update of EU guidelines on the safety assessment of substances used in food contact materials (FCMs). The Draft Scientific Opinion includes:
- Better estimations of consumer exposure to FCM substances, which are based on food consumption surveys and food group categories
- New technological approaches, such as modeling for estimating migration of the residues of these materials into food
- Better toxicity testing strategies, related tiered approaches and data requirements
- Recommendation of non-testing methods for the safety evaluation of non-intentionally added substances
Deadline for submission of comments is October 7, 2015.
