BULLETIN: NYC Fire

TO: Subscribers to UL's Listing Services for Power-Limited Fire-Alarm Cable (HNIR)

SUBJECT: Power Limited Fire Alarm Cable for Use in New York City

This Bulletin provides notification of UL’s Certification Program for Power Limited Fire Alarm Cables intended for installation within the City of New York. Cables certified in accordance with the requirements described in the Standard for Cables for Power-Limited Fire-­Alarm Circuits, UL 1424 may now be additionally investigated to comply with the requirements described in the New York City 2011 Electrical Code, Article 760.

In addition to the requirements described in UL1424, the cables Certified under this program must comply with the following requirements:

  1. The cables are Type FPLP.
  2. The cables have a minimum temperature rating of 150°C.
  3. The cables employ insulation with a minimum average thickness of 15 mils.
  4. The cables shall have a jacket with a minimum average thickness of 25 mils.
  5. The cables must be colored red.
  6. The cable marking must be visible on the surface of the cables.
  7. Conductors must be 18 AWG or larger.

 

CERTIFICATION MARKINGS (LABELS)

These cables are covered under UL’s Follow-Up Service Inspection Program in conjunction with the Listed cables. Subscribers with this additional coverage will continue to appear under “Power Limited Fire- Alarm Cable”, (category HNIR)in the Online Certification Directory. Cables that are UL Certified are identified by the presence of a UL Mark. The Certification Mark consists of the following:

UL LISTED

POWER LIMITED FIRE ALARM CABLE

ALSO CLASSIFIED FOR USE AS FIRE ALARM CABLE IN NEW YORK CITY

Serial No. XXXXXXX ___ FEET

The company name, logo, trademark, or other identification shown under the individual company certifications must be included in addition to the label text shown above. All Certification Marks shall include a unique Serial (Issue) number. At least one label shall be furnished with each box or reel. The total footage of certified cable in each box or reel is represented by the number of feet of cable shown on the Certification Mark. The Labels must be sourced through UL as the labels are required to be holographic. SURFACE PRINTING REQUIREMENTS

These cables are surface printed In accordance with the requirements in UL 1424. The printing shall state “ALSO CLASSIFIED NYC CERT. FIRE ALARM CABLE” and bear the UL logo in the surface-print legend. An example of a surface-print legend is as follows:

XYZ CO" 4PR 16 AWG 150C (UL) FPLP ALSO CLASSIFIED NYC CERT FIRE ALARM CABLE

Manufacturers of certified Power Limited Fire-Alarm Cable will receive revised Follow-Up Services Procedure pages to include the above changes. The revisions will be completed within the next six months at no cost.
