On Aug. 19, 2026, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) published ISO 8124-5:2026, the second edition of its international standard covering the determination of total concentration of certain elements in toys.

The standard outlines sampling and analytical methods for detecting antimony, arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury and selenium in toy materials and components. It applies to a broad range of materials, including coatings, plastics, paper products, natural or synthetic textiles, metals, wood, modeling compounds and certain packaging with play value.

The document also introduces screening procedures for plastics using energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. The updated standard replaces the withdrawn 2015 edition.
