On Sept. 7, 2026, the European Commission (EC) adopted a delegated regulation to add long-chain perfluorocarboxylic acids (C9-C21 PFCAs), their salts and related compounds to Annex I of Regulation (EU) 2019/1021 on persistent organic pollutants.

This measure implements a 2025 decision under the Stockholm Convention to phase out these highly persistent chemicals due to environmental and health concerns. Long-chain PFCAs are widely associated with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) substances and are known for their resistance to degradation. The regulation sets strict limits for unintentional contamination in products, establishes transitional provisions for fluoroplastics, polytetrafluoroethylene micropowders and firefighting foams, and allows limited exemptions for semiconductor spare parts.

The regulation will enter into force 20 days after its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union.
