Controls Verification Procedure Testing Services

UL Solutions offers controls verification procedure (CVP) testing to verify that controls can operate as intended during regulatory testing.

Building on years of experience with load-based testing (LBT), we partner with leading heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVACR) manufacturers to pilot controls verification procedure (CVP) methodologies and provide feedback that helps shape the approach to testing.

What is CVP and why does it matter?

The potential for improved energy efficiency grows as HVACR systems incorporate variable-speed compressors and fan motors. Traditional performance testing methods rely on static conditions and fail to measure how these systems operate under real-world scenarios.

The CVP is a testing methodology developed to assess whether HVACR equipment can function as intended under its native control algorithms during regulatory testing. By allowing systems to run dynamically, CVP confirms that variable-speed units perform across different load conditions.

How CVP testing works

CVP testing evaluates whether a variable-speed system truly modulates performance across load conditions rather than functioning like a basic on/off or two-stage unit. The procedure verifies that the unit delivers performance within an acceptable range of its declared cooling or heating capacity and energy efficiency ratio (EER). More details can be found in the AHRI General Operations Manual.

Our newly expanded laboratory facilities in Plano, Texas and Carugate, Italy feature responsive chambers and proprietary data acquisition software to capture detailed performance data, including transition periods. This allows us to restart tests at any point, helping manufacturers fine-tune controls and optimize system behavior.

Our alignment with AHRI

UL Solutions conducts CVP testing in alignment with guidance provided by AHRI, helping manufacturers meet evolving industry expectations. While AHRI is the official certification body accredited to ISO 17065 and responsible for listing products in the AHRI Directory, UL Solutions supports this process by issuing ISO 17025-accredited test reports.

As an independent third-party laboratory, we help manufacturers validate performance, refine controls and prepare for certification with confidence. This collaborative approach supports consistency and transparency across the HVAC industry.

Support for R&D

Our CVP testing services extend beyond certification support. We also offer:

  • Expertise as you validate control strategies, troubleshoot performance issues and refine system behavior under dynamic operating conditions.*
  • Flexible testing workflows that accommodate iterative R&D cycles and help you explore alternative configurations.
  • Real-time testing to evaluate the impact of changes, like set points or control algorithm adjustments.
  • Efficiency-focused reports to align HVAC system behavior with design intent.
  • A collaborative approach that allows your engineering teams to work closely with our experts as we help accelerate development timelines and improve product outcomes.
