AWM testing and certification

UL Solutions provides appliance wiring material testing and certification that helps you demonstrate objective compliance and make it easier for OEMs to source your AWM wire with confidence. Our program addresses the safety risks of uncertified or inferior materials and supports faster, more efficient paths to market.

Why certify appliance wiring material

Using uncertified or counterfeit wiring materials in end products can introduce significant safety hazards and potential recall risk. Certification through UL Solutions helps you validate construction and performance, protect your brand and meet customer and regulatory expectations for appliance wiring material testing.

What we test and recognize

We evaluate and certify AWM constructions across an evolving library of 7,000+ AWM styles defined by material, voltage, temperature, environmental exposure, flame and other ratings. Supplying and using UL Recognized wiring components can be a cost‑effective way to show compliance in end products.

AWM wire specifications and styles

AWM electrical performance is established by construction and anticipated use. Typical attributes include voltage, temperature and flame ratings, plus environmental exposure. End product manufacturers frequently base sourcing specifications on individual AWM wire specifications and styles to align with internal policies and applicable standards.

Standards and methods

In the U.S., AWM is tested and certified to ANSI/UL 758. In Canada, AWM and equipment wire are tested and certified to CSA C22.2 No. 127 and CSA C22.2 No. 210. The specific tests performed depend on the construction and intended application of the product.

Find AWM in Product iQ

Certified AWM appears in Product iQ, UL Solutions’ searchable database used by engineers, product developers and specifiers to verify certifications and find alternatives. Listing in Product iQ helps buyers quickly identify compliant AWM wire styles and suppliers.

Reduce risk and time to market

Working with UL Solutions can reduce the time and costs of bringing products to market while helping you manage the risk of unsafe or noncompliant wiring entering your supply chain. Our compliance system and global expertise support reliable sourcing and efficient certification.

Ongoing surveillance and traceability

Compliance continues after initial certification. UL Solutions provides Follow‑Up Services with onsite inspections and audits to help confirm ongoing conformity of certified products and components. We also apply market surveillance and brand protection measures, including holographic labels where applicable, to help deter counterfeiting and support supply chain integrity.

Wiring harness traceability

If your AWM is processed into harnesses before final assembly, UL Solutions’ Wiring Harness Traceability Program helps monitor cables from the manufacturing plant to the harness producer and into final assembly. The program supports acceptance of third‑party manufactured harnesses and provides access to a global network of certified harness manufacturers.

Wire and cable material recognition

For polymeric compounds used in AWM, the Wire and Cable Material Recognition Program evaluates materials against applicable standards. Using Recognized compounds can streamline later certifications and help communicate performance properties to customers through the Component Recognition Mark and Product iQ listings.
