Recent updates to the National Electrical Code (NEC) expand ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) protection requirements to nearly all outlets, affecting both plug-in appliances and permanently installed equipment.
These changes directly affect key appliance categories, including electric ranges (UL 858), refrigerators (UL 60335-2-24), clothes washers and dryers (UL 2157 / UL 2158), HVAC (UL 60335-2-40).
At the same time, appliances increasingly incorporate nonlinear power electronics to meet energy-efficiency regulations, resulting in leakage currents that can trigger unexpected GFCI nuisance tripping — driving customer dissatisfaction, service calls and increased compliance risk.
