Mechanical Protection Tubing Testing and Certification

Our comprehensive certification program for mechanical protection tubing and fittings enables you to demonstrate compliance with safety requirements for the mechanical protection of insulated conductors, wires and cables.

Cables in corrugated pipe.

UL Solutions mechanical protection tubing (MPT) and fittings program covers products that have been submitted for evaluation in accordance with physical, mechanical, thermal and flammability performance requirements. MPT and fittings offer mechanical protection to insulated conductors, wires and cables. Fittings provide numerous methods of connecting enclosures, consoles and additional lengths of MPT used in electrical equipment. MPT and fittings are essential components of any electrical system in factory installations.

Mechanical protection tubing (MPT) and fitting category certifications expand manufacturers’ options, offering additional end-product value by streamlining the certification process and reducing costs and time-to-market.

We offer MPT and fittings certification services to enable you to expand into the U.S. and Canadian markets. Component MPT and fittings combinations that comply with requirements are covered under UL Solutions’ component certification program, which provides a convenient way for end-product manufacturers to source component MPT and fittings that meet necessary performance requirements applicable to their UL Certified products.

MPT and fittings are covered under the following four categories based on the type of product and end-use application:

Category Name Standard(s) Category Code Number (CCN) for U.S. CCN for Canada
Tubing, Mechanical Protection and Fittings – Component ANSI/UL 1696 and CSA C22.2 No. 227.3 YDRQ2 YDRQ8

MPT and fittings category

The end-use product manufacturer selects the performance properties that match the demands of the individual application. These MPT and fittings are intended for installation as components of complete equipment or system; suitability is determined in an end-product investigation by UL Solutions. MPT and fittings are tested in accordance with ANSI/UL 1696, the Standard for Mechanical Protection Tubing (MPT) and Fittings, and CSA C22.2 No. 227.3.

Here is brief description of UL Solutions’ MPT and fittings certification category and corresponding CCN:

  • Tubing, Mechanical Protection and Fittings – Component (YDRQ2/8) – This category covers tubing and fittings intended to interconnect separate component assemblies or consoles of electrical devices, such as robotics, medical or x-ray equipment. The mechanical protection provided to the internal wiring is equivalent to a Type SJT flexible cord.

Tubing consists of nonmetallic materials and may be a composite with rigid metallic reinforcement. Fittings may consist of a variety of material combinations and means of mounting such as knockouts, threaded openings or flanges. Construction and ratings must be in accordance with UL 1696.

Evaluation includes a construction review and testing for physical, mechanical, thermal and flammability properties. Performance tests for tubing and fittings include the following tests: resistance to flammability, physical properties (tension), resistance to cracking from flexing and impact in cold environments, and separation of tubing/fitting interface.

Testing may also include weather resistance for tubing and liquid tightness of the fitting connection for use in wet locations.

Conditions of acceptability

Guidelines addressing the suitability of MPT and fittings when used with an end-product are included in the UL Solutions report under conditions of acceptability. The conditions of acceptability generally cover voltage ratings, temperature ratings and optional ratings for which the product was found acceptable. The conditions of acceptability are also published in the UL Product iQ® database.

Recognition for Canada

Under our Canadian certification program, UL Solutions tests products to CSA C22.2 No. 227.3. As the ANSI/UL 1696 and CSA C22.2 No. 227.3 standards are harmonized and include the same test methods, no additional testing is necessary to grant Canadian Recognition. Products found to comply with Canadian requirements are marked with the Canadian UL Recognized Component Mark. Products certified for Canada are published under CCN YDRQ8.

UL Solutions Follow-Up Services

All recognized component MPT and fittings fall under the UL Solutions Follow-Up Services program, which states that UL Certified products must continue to be manufactured in compliance with UL Solutions requirements.

Benefits

We are uniquely positioned to provide a complete view of how products function within a given system. This is particularly critical in the plastics and components industry, as interactions between substances, parts, systems and the environment can cause a significant number of hazards. These failures are rarely apparent when components are tested individually.

Our technical experts can also help align your products to the appropriate UL Solutions certification category and the applicable Standards. This enables manufacturers of UL Certified products to easily source components that demonstrably meet their compliance requirements and project specifications.

Additionally, our worldwide presence allows us to provide local services to you and your team. You’ll have access to our network of experts who will support you in your drive to protect public safety and brand value.

With our trustworthy reputation, certification by UL Solutions provides an important product differentiator in a crowded marketplace, communicating your product’s safety and performance to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), purchasers and regulatory authorities.
