Anti-theft equipment certification for retail and commercial security
UL Solutions offers third-party testing, inspection and certification services for antitheft equipment used in residential, retail and commercial environments. From safes and security containers to merchandise theft deterrents, we help manufacturers demonstrate product performance and build buyer confidence through rigorous evaluation against industry-recognized standards.
Our certifications support product differentiation and demonstrate regulatory compliance for physical security products.
What we certify
Our anti-theft testing and certification services cover a wide range of security devices, including:
- Safes and lock boxes
- Residential security containers (gun safes)
- Hotel room safes
- Retail theft deterrent devices and tags
Whether used to store valuables, firearms or merchandise, these products require performance and durability to protect against unauthorized access and theft. UL Solutions provides the testing and certification needed to help determine whether products meet those requirements.
Anti-theft device standards
UL Solutions can test and certify antitheft equipment to the following Standards:
- UL 1037, the Standard for Antitheft Alarms and Devices
- UL 687, the Standard for Burglary-Resistant Safes
- UL 608, the Standard for Burglary Resistant Vault Doors and Modular Panels
- UL 768, the Standard for Combination Locks
Standards-based testing and certification
For residential security containers — commonly known as gun safes — we evaluate products using UL 1037, with a three-tier system that reflects increasing levels of resistance to physical attack.
Graduated performance levels:
- Attack Level One: Five-minute attack using common hand tools by one technician.
- Attack Level Two: Ten-minute attack by two technicians using more aggressive tools, including carbide drills and pressure devices. Includes attempts to create a six-square-inch opening.
- Attack Level Three: Ten-minute attack using the most advanced toolsets. The product must resist a smaller, two-square-inch maximum breach.
- Drop Testing for Lightweight Containers: Products under 750 pounds may be subject to a drop test that simulates forced entry by impact. If the product includes secure mounting provisions with clear installation instructions, this test may not apply.
This tiered framework allows manufacturers to select the appropriate security level and gives consumers more choice and clarity when selecting protection products.
