Nippon Paint’s path to EPD certification in Vietnam
Background
Nippon Paint is a global manufacturer of paints and coatings with operations in 48 countries and territories. Founded in Japan, the company is a leading paint and coatings producer in the Asia Pacific region in terms of production volume and revenue. With more than 38,500 employees worldwide, Nippon Paint develops coatings for a variety of applications, including buildings, infrastructure, marine, automotive and industrial products.
Challenge
As demand increases for sustainable building materials, manufacturers face growing pressure to disclose verified environmental data. To support participation in green building programs such as LEED, Nippon Paint needed to provide transparent information on the environmental performance of its coatings. Producing environmental product declarations (EPDs) required life cycle assessment (LCA) expertise and experts who could help them navigate international standards and requirements.
The approach
Nippon Paint collaborated with UL Solutions to pursue EPD certification. The effort began at the company’s Vietnam facility, which received its EPD on June 24, 2025. The EPD covered wall paints and was the first in a portfolio expected to expand to other business segments.
To help Nippon Paint meet its goals, UL Solutions supported the EPD development and third-party certification process. Nippon Paint contributed data from its production and supply chain, which enabled practitioner teams to build streamlined LCA models. UL Solutions provided guidance throughout the project and coordinated with an independent verifier to meet applicable requirements.
Results
Nippon Paint achieved EPD certification for its Vietnam wall paints in just three months. The EPD certification helps the company respond to sustainability expectations from customers, regulators and project developers across the Asia Pacific region and beyond.
“At Nippon Paint, sustainability is a core pillar of our long-term global growth strategy,” said a Nippon Paint representative. “Achieving environmental product declaration (EPD) certification is a key milestone that demonstrates our commitment to transparency, environmental responsibility and alignment with international standards.
To support this, we worked with UL Solutions, a globally recognized third party, to verify product life cycle assessments and showcase the credibility of our EPDs. UL Solutions’ rigorous approach has enabled us to accurately communicate the environmental impact of our products. This collaboration enhances trust with stakeholders, strengthens our brand credibility and reinforces Nippon Paint’s position as a global leader in responsible and future-ready coatings.”
Looking ahead
Following the initial success in Vietnam, Nippon Paint plans to pursue EPD certification for additional product lines and facilities. The company is also exploring product carbon footprint (PCF) verification to further enhance transparency and align with greenhouse gas emissions reporting requirements.
These initiatives support Nippon Paint’s broader environmental, social and governance (ESG) goals and reflect its ongoing commitment to responsible manufacturing.
