Catherine Sheehy, PMP
Advisory lead, Advisory Services – UL Environment
Sheehy brings to clients, 20 years of project and program management experience. She manages a range of advisory projects including sustainability training initiatives, sustainability risk assessments and greener market positioning support.
Sheehy’s other work experience included updating and growing the Corporate Equality Index for the Human Rights Campaign and served as director of Corporate Benchmarking Services at the Investor Responsibility Research Center, where she provided social and environmental screening data on companies to institutional investors.
Sheehy holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Notre Dame, an Master of Business Administration from the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland, and is a certified Project Management Professional.<
Bill Hoffman, Ph.D, UL Corporate Fellow
Research scientist, Advisory Services – UL Environment
Hoffman manages the UL Environment science team working on the technical basis for the development of standards and guidance for standards including the green chemistry and sustainable chemistry aspects of product environmental performance, validation of claims, and product certification. His work provides a strong technical basis for product environmental performance by using a deep scientific analysis of the environmental impact of a product while also assuring companies producing the product are using environmentally progressive manufacturing methods. Hoffman is member of the William Henry Merrill Society, a UL Corporate Fellow.
Before joining UL Environment, Hoffman was responsible for strategy and deployment of sustainability services and worked on the development of several specifications including standards governing the chemical content of products and was heavily involved in external standardization efforts for environmental issues in electronics.
Hoffman holds a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from Southern Illinois University and holds a doctorate in physical chemistry from Illinois Institute of Technology.
Elliott Horner, Ph.D
Lead scientist – UL Environment
Horner directs the mold laboratory for UL Environment. He has conducted research on: mold development on building materials, simulated water losses, microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs), fungal allergens, aerobiology monitoring, ultrafine particles, mold growth on latex paint and other materials, soil and root fungi in trees, field surveys of residential indoor air and microbial contamination in buildings. He has provided expert testimony for both plaintiff and defense. He developed and taught U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sponsored training programs on sampling bioaerosols and indoor mold and has written more than 37 peer-reviewed research papers, 10 book chapters, eight reviews, and numerous other publications and conference proceedings.
Xue Wang, Ph.D
Project coordinator, Advisory Services – UL Environment
Wang has more than four years of experience in environmental sustainability science. As a project coordinator at UL Environment, her main responsibilities include developing innovative claims and Environmental Claim Validation procedures and conducting scientific research to support consulting and advisory projects.
Her dissertation research focused on the quantification of the environmental risks and opportunities for end-of-life electronic products. Her areas of expertise include life cycle assessment, sustainability metrics, risk assessment, nanoparticle exposure assessment, multicriteria decision-making analysis, energy efficiency, material flow analysis and economic analysis.
Xue earned her doctorate in sustainability from Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in June 2014. She also holds a master’s degree in applied statistics from RIT.
Senior sustainability consultant
Kardos is based in Canada and has 10 years of project and program management experience. As a senior sustainability consultant, he oversees a range of projects designed to assist customers in meeting their sustainability and circularity objectives. He has also been a core team member in the development and execution of UL 2799 Zero Waste to Landfill program since joining UL in 2012. Before joining UL, Kardos was a consultant at Terrachoice, with a focus in environmental marketing. Kardos’s areas of expertise include: greenwashing, circular economy, ecolabeling, sustainable product design, Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS), environmental impact assessment, corporate sustainability reporting and Lean Six Sigma. Kardos graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Carleton University and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in environmental management and sustainability from Harvard University.
Wain is a consultant focused on the development of low carbon and circular economies. He supports UL's efforts to establish measurement and management systems that enable transitions to circular economies in transparent, sustainable and safe ways. Prior to joining UL, Wain worked for Accenture Strategy where he specialized in sustainability strategy within consumer goods and manufacturing. He has Bachelor of Science in geography from University College London focused on environmental management and sustainable sourcing.
