Developing strategies for responsible use of AI was a key theme that emerged at Powering Korea’s AI Future: Partnership, Policy, and Scale, the AI forum held on July 2 in Seoul. Presented by the American Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM), the event brought together senior government officials and industry leaders from Korea and the U.S. to discuss opportunities for collaboration and the tools needed to be competitive in this dynamic field.

During the presentation “From AI Innovation to AI Stewardship: A Practical Approach to Safer, More Secure Deployment,” Jason Chan, vice president of data and innovation at UL Solutions, emphasized that organizations should take a proactive approach to addressing AI risks.

“AI can sustain growth when it is built on strong governance and transparency,” Chan said. “Innovation alone is not enough. Independent testing and certification are essential to building trust and confidence across the AI life cycle.”

AI is increasingly embedded in safety-critical applications, including vehicles, industrial systems and healthcare environments. As the technology that powers these systems continues to evolve, managing potential risks will be essential to long-term success.

“AI risk is no longer theoretical,” Chan said. “The leaders are those embedding trust, safety and governance by design, enabling them to move fast without sacrificing confidence, compliance or brand trust.”

A key focus of Chan’s presentation was UL 3115, the Outline of Investigation for Safety of AI-Based Products. UL 3115 provides a structured framework to evaluate AI-based products before and during deployment. UL Solutions can evaluate these products against established safety criteria to help companies demonstrate alignment with recognized requirements for trustworthy AI.

Chan explained that the framework is designed to evaluate how AI systems behave in real-world operating conditions, helping organizations identify and address potential risks. These certification services support safer system behavior, more predictable outcomes and improved resilience.

Later during the forum, Dr. Young M. Lee, technical leader and principal engineer, artificial intelligence at UL Solutions, participated in a leadership panel discussion on AI development in Korea.

“Without trust, organizations hesitate to deploy AI, and customers hesitate to use it,” Lee said. “Effective AI governance, safety assessment, safety testing and assurance frameworks help reduce risk and provide greater confidence for developers, customers and regulators.”

Lee also noted that UL 3115, Korea’s AI Basic Act and international frameworks such as the EU AI Act and ISO/IEC AI standards provide important foundations for responsible AI deployment.

UL Solutions’ participation in the forum reflects its commitment to advancing safer, more secure and more trustworthy AI systems through independent evaluation and certification services.
