Dr. Robert Slone, senior vice president, chief scientist and innovation officer at UL Solutions, recently appeared on two podcasts to share his expertise on artificial intelligence (AI).
Slone joined host Neil C. Hughes on the Tech Talks Daily podcast to address a key question: How can organizations move AI forward without losing sight of safety, accountability and public trust? Slone discussed how independent, evidence-based evaluation can help organizations and consumers better understand the trustworthiness of AI-enabled products.
Slone described tools used to help support safer deployment of AI-enabled products, such as the UL 3115 certification services offered by UL Solutions.
Slone also outlined three interconnected pillars for evaluating AI-enabled products. The technical pillar considers robustness, risk management and whether the system performs its intended purpose. The ethical pillar addresses fairness, bias, privacy, transparency and explainability. The governance pillar covers data management, accountability, product updates and oversight across the life cycle of the system.

The Scaling Laws podcast recently invited Slone and Bri Treece, executive director of the Partnership for Assurance, Credibility and Trust on Artificial Intelligence (PACT AI), to discuss the infrastructure needed to support trustworthy AI adoption. This wide-ranging conversation on building an AI assurance ecosystem was hosted by Kevin Frazier.
The discussion examined a central challenge facing enterprises today: AI is rapidly being incorporated into products, services, business operations and critical infrastructure, but the evidence, language and accountability systems around it are still developing.
Treece explained that PACT AI is working across three connected areas: policy, market development and assurance infrastructure.
Slone said UL Solutions’ efforts are grounded in impartiality, consistency and competency. Those principles help create a disciplined basis for determining whether a product, version and defined use case satisfy specified requirements.
A key theme of the conversation was that independent, third-party assurance can make limitations more visible and help clarify who is accountable when performance moves outside an accepted range.
