Electrical, medical and gas equipment for use within Canada must be approved and meet the safety requirements of the Canadian SPE model and gas codes. In certain situations, this equipment may not need to go through the full product certification process. In these cases, you can opt to have your equipment evaluated and approved through the UL Solutions Special Inspection-Field Evaluation Program.

A special inspection or field evaluation is a process through which products that do not have a certification acceptable to the Canadian code authority, owner or other regulatory body can be evaluated to the applicable product safety standards or model codes for the product’s specific application and location. This process includes construction inspection for use of components, assembly and limited nondestructive testing to complete the assessment.

While a special inspection-field evaluation is not meant to replace regular certification, UL Solutions designed this program specifically for Canadian manufacturers, importers and end users of one-of-a-kind or limited-production equipment.

The evaluation process

If the product complies with the applicable requirements, we will immediately apply a ULC Special Inspection-Field Evaluation Product Label to the product and provide a final report. If the product does not meet the requirements, we will provide a detailed preliminary findings report citing each issue and applicable standard reference. The ULC Special Inspection-Field Evaluation Product Label and final report provide you with the proof of compliance the local authorities require you to have before the equipment can be used.
