Matthew Wright, a seasoned fire and built environment industry professional, has joined UL Solutions’ Codes and Regulatory Services (CARS) department as a senior regulatory engineer, supporting advocacy and regulatory engagement efforts across UL Solutions Testing, Inspection and Certification (TIC) Industrial services. In this role, he addresses challenges related to new technologies and supports safety objectives. This includes working with UL Solutions’ global network and supporting regulatory engagement efforts across Australia and New Zealand and Southeast Asia.
Based in Melbourne, Australia, Wright joined UL Solutions in March 2020 as a Built Environment business development manager for Australia and New Zealand, helping expand the UL-AU Mark. With nearly 30 years of industry experience, he transitioned to global product manager for fire detection in November 2021. In that role, he broadened his global market expertise, leading portfolio initiatives and building a strong international network across UL Solutions, including participation in the CARS Global Regulatory Network (GRN) a worldwide, cross-regional network that helps the UL enterprise advance its business objectives and public safety mission by providing global regulatory support.
Wright holds a Bachelor of Technology in Building Surveying from Swinburne University of Technology and a Graduate Certificate in Performance Based Building and Fire Codes and Graduate Diploma in Fire Safety and Risk Engineering from Victoria University.
Before UL Solutions, he worked across local government (enforcement), private building surveying (building approvals), the fire department and Australia’s peak fire protection association. He was appointed to two terms on the State of Victoria’s Building Appeals Board and represented the Fire Protection Association Australia on the Australian Building Codes Board.
A respected industry advocate, Wright has influenced legislation, codes and standards, including contributions to changing strategies and requirements of the National Construction Code and practitioner competency frameworks.
Wright was inducted into the William Henry Merrill Society as a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff in October 2025.
