In an era of remarkable technological advancement, the fire, security and electrical sectors face unique opportunities and complex challenges. They operate within an evolving landscape of emerging technologies, including the Internet of Things (IoT) and the industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) devices. These devices, along with advancements such as artificial intelligence (AI) and digital twins, are reshaping industries by enhancing predictive maintenance, real-time monitoring and operational efficiency.

However, their adoption necessitates the careful management of risks. At the 2024 Convening of the Councils, we looked at how IoT technologies are transforming the fire, electrical and security industries by creating new capabilities and introducing new risks.

What is IoT?

The Internet of Things is a blanket term that includes the entire network of internet-connected devices. This includes digital devices such as smartphones and laptops along with vehicles, home appliances, smart thermostats and more. On the industrial side, the same concept applies but also includes sensors, instruments, and other devices that support production and the collection, analysis and exchange of information throughout an organization, from manufacturing to logistics.

According to IoT Analytics, there are approximately 20 billion IoT endpoints in global manufacturing, and that number is growing rapidly.

IoT development and use for fire safety

Currently, fire safety efforts are heavily focused on integrating IoT sensors and advanced suppression systems to improve detection and response. Innovations such as automated suppression systems and IoT-enabled fire detection are already reshaping the industry, and these devices are helping to provide real-time data on temperature and humidity for early detection and remote monitoring.

Fire safety standards must evolve to include specifications for these technologies and the smart buildings in which they are installed. Efforts are underway to make this possible, and this work must continue so the industry can align safety and innovation through collaborative governance models.

The electrical industry is prioritizing industrial IoT and sustainable energy solutions for long-term growth. As a result, stakeholders must adopt energy-efficient practices to balance technological growth with environmental stewardship.

The increasing adoption of IoT-enabled devices, paired with smart home systems and advanced energy storage solutions, presents unique safety challenges, particularly around battery safety, electromagnetic compatibility and cybersecurity for networked devices. This connectivity supports real-time monitoring and predictive maintenance that boost reliability, but cybersecurity risks also surface. Prioritizing security will be critical as networked devices become common, increasing in both number and use.

The proliferation of IoT devices has brought unparalleled connectivity as well as significant security challenges. Every device becomes an access point within a given network and creates an entry point for cyber threats. Experts highlight the vulnerabilities within IoT systems and the importance of standardized security protocols to protect users and their data from cyber threats.

Sustainability considerations in a connected world

The environmental impact of these energy-intensive technologies must also be addressed. Along with devices requiring electricity, their interconnection also represents significant demand. Energy-efficient solutions and sustainable designs that align innovation with ecological stewardship and scalability will become essential to support a sustainable future.
