Today, repairability is a differentiator

Repairability is a defining measure of appliance quality and sustainability. As manufacturers, policymakers and consumers focus on extending product life and reducing waste, the ability to repair, maintain and upgrade products is under growing scrutiny. Appliances that are easier to repair help conserve resources, reduce environmental impact and support a more circular economy.

Credible repairability information helps manufacturers demonstrate transparency, strengthen trust and position their products for evolving regulatory and market expectations.

How verified repairability ratings support market differentiation

UL Solutions Repairability Rating Program (RRP) is an third-party Marketing Claim Verification service designed to evaluate and communicate a product’s repairability.

Based on established best practices from DIN EN 45554 and using UL 1590, Methodology for Marketing Claim Verification: Product Repairability Rating (Bronze/Silver/Gold/Platinum/Diamond), the program delivers a clear, science-based repairability score supported by a recognized UL Verification Mark for qualifying products.

By understanding which components and design choices most affect repairability, manufacturers can improve the overall product construction in the hopes of maximizing their reparability rating.

The result is a credible repairability rating that can be confidently shared with regulators, customers, suppliers and consumers.

Product-focused evaluation framework

The RRP assesses appliances and electronic products using a structured methodology that reflects real-world repair conditions. Evaluation criteria include factors such as disassembly, tools required, spare parts availability, access to repair information and skill level needed for repair.

Appliances are rated on a 1.0 to 10.0 scale. A rating of 6.0 or higher earns a UL Verification Mark which is categorized by five performance levels — Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond — making repairability performance easy to understand and compare across appliance categories.

Expertise you can trust

Backed by deep technical expertise and global credibility, UL Solutions provides third-party repairability assessments that support informed purchasing decisions. Beyond delivering a verified score, insights from the program can help manufacturers identify improvement opportunities, address design challenges and enhance product longevity.

With UL Solutions, manufacturers gain clarity and confidence in demonstrating repairability in an increasingly sustainability-focused market.
