UL Recycled Content Validation and Recycled Content

UL experts provide insight into the recycled content system

The popularity of green product marketing has caused a rise in the use of environmental claims, sometimes making it difficult to differentiate between products that are genuinely environmentally preferable and those that aren’t. This is increasingly true today of recycled content claims in a market where the demand for high-performing recycled content exceeds supply. UL can help you prove to the marketplace that your products live up to their recycled content claims and do not perpetuate “greenwashing” — helping provide credibility and a clear advantage in a competitive marketplace:

  • Dell's innovative closed loop post-consumer recycled plastic content claim  backed by UL's Environmental Claim Validation (UL ECVP 2809). Dell's OptiPlex 3030 All-In-One computers are verified to contain a minimum of 10% post-consumer closed loop recycled content.
  • HP receives first recycled content validation for ocean-bound plastics from UL. HP has upcycled more than 1 million pounds of ocean-bound plastic, roughly 35 million plastic bottles, into its products.
  • The Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) has endorsed UL’s validation program as a trusted, third-party program for the evaluation of post-consumer recycled plastics in products. As an endorsed service provider, UL is recognized for providing content validations that are reliable, consistent and accessible by both producers and users of recycled plastic resins according to the definition in ISO 14021:2016.

The UL Recycled Content Validation Mark enables you to confidently showcase your progress in achieving your commitments to incorporating recycled content in your products to consumers, brand owners and institutional purchasers. This provides you with a distinct advantage in an ambiguous, green marketplace. Recycled content not only speaks to the efficiencies and integrity of your supply chain, it also speaks to the commitment you’ve made to environmental stewardship.
