On January 15, 2026, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) published a final rule to extend the compliance deadlines for the US Hazard Communication Standard (HazCom) update, originally published on May 20, 2024. The May 2024 update moved OSHA’s HazCom standard to adopt the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling (GHS) to the 7th Revision of the Purple Book with some additional elements from the 8th Revision of the Purple Book. OSHA stated that they have not been able to publish important guidance documentation and without this documentation both the regulated community and the agency would be challenged to meet the first deadline for substances that was fast approaching on January 19, 2026.

Each of the four compliance deadlines was extended by four months and are outlined in the table below. During this extended compliance period, companies are allowed to continue to utilize the requirements in either the 2012 HazCom Standard or the 2024 HazCom Standard.

Compliance TypeCompliance Deadline
SubstancesJanuary 19, 2026 → May 19, 2026
Workplace substances (HazCom policy, workplace labelling, employee training)July 20, 2026 → November 20, 2026
MixturesJuly 19, 2027 → November 19, 2027
Workplace mixtures (HazCom policy, workplace labelling, employee training)January 19, 2028 → May 19, 2028

Since the May 2024 update, OSHA has additionally published two separate correction notices to address typos and errors that were published in the final rule, within both the regulatory text and appendices. Please see our previous news article that covers the changes in the updated 2024 HazCom requirements (Final Rule Issued, OSHA Moves to Rev 7 with Rev 8 Additions).
