Chemicals: Denmark Bans Clothing, Footwear and Impregnation Agents Containing PFAS

Denmark ordered a prohibition on the import and sale to consumers of clothing, footwear and certain impregnation agents containing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

On May 2, 2025, Denmark ordered a prohibition on the import and sale to consumers of clothing, footwear and certain impregnation agents containing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

The ban on PFAS is as follows:

  • Clothing or footwear for personal or private use, where at least one article included in the clothing or footwear contains a total fluorine content of 50 milligrams fluorine per kilogram (mg F/kg) or higher
  • Impregnating agents for clothing or footwear for private use containing a total fluorine content of 50 mg F/kg or higher

This order entered into force on July 1, 2025, and the prohibitions shall take effect starting July 1, 2026. Sales from traders' stocks of clothing, footwear and impregnating agents shall be permitted until Jan. 1, 2027.
