Battery Enclosure Material Screening (BEMS) services

Battery Enclosure Thermal Runaway (BETR) evaluation

Our Battery Enclosure Thermal Runaway (BETR) evaluation uses UL 2596, the Test Method for Thermal and Mechanical Performance of Battery Enclosure Materials. Our testing methodology evaluates material performance by simulating a thermal runaway scenario.  

Surface Tracking Test (STT) for Transportation applications  

The STT method was designed specifically for evaluating the material performance of electric vehicle architectures operating between 600 V and 900 V. It also provides additional guidance and insight into the material selection process for automotive manufacturers.

Torch and Grit (TaG) Test

This test method screens for the dynamic stresses found in a thermal runaway event, focusing on the evaluation of temperature and mechanical abrasion. 
 

Supporting emerging technologies  

As battery technologies evolve, we support innovation with expertise. UL Solutions is actively developing specific standards for solid-state batteries (SSBs), with UL 2286 (Standard for Performance and Reliability of Solid-State Batteries) and UL 2285, a developing joint U.S.-Canada safety standard, that provides safety requirements, test methods, and performance criteria for solid-state batteries.  

We also support compliance with the European Battery Regulation, helping manufacturers address evolving requirements related to safety, performance, sustainability, traceability and end‑of‑life considerations.
