Protective Coatings Testing and Certification

Overview

Our certification program for protective coatings covers test procedures and performance criteria for the evaluation of organic and metallic corrosion protection coatings of steel enclosures. Protective coatings that meet our requirements are certified as UL Recognized Components and are published in UL’s Product iQ Database.

Organic coatings

The general use of these coatings is for protection of the metal against atmospheric corrosion when applied to surfaces of steel enclosures, typically in outdoor-use environments. Depending on a product’s intended usage, we might conduct a salt-spray (fog) test, moist carbon dioxide-sulfur dioxide-air test and/or a light and water test for clear coatings.

Traceability of protective coatings

We also offer a corrosion protection coating traceability program intended to eliminate the uncertainty of the protective coating identity and application process in an end-use product. The program provides traceability along the supply chain and verification of the correct application process for UL Recognized component organic coating systems. 

Metallic coatings

DTHW covers metallic coatings — zinc, zinc-iron, aluminum-zinc, zinc-aluminum-magnesium and zinc-nickel alloy — and the substrates to which they are applied. Metallic coatings are intended to be applied to exterior and interior surfaces of steel enclosures of outdoor-use electrical equipment to protect the metal against atmospheric corrosion.
