Overview

Laser and LED technology has led technological advancements in diverse industries including information technology, healthcare, entertainment and automotive. With the prevalence of laser/LED products at home and at work, you need to minimize the optical radiation risks of your products.

At the same time, you are required to comply with regulatory standards before your laser or LED products can enter the U.S. and global marketplace. Those standards include U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) / Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) 21 CFR (laser), International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 60825-1 (laser), and IEC 62471 (LEDs). In certain instances, you can face costly product recalls and fines if your laser/LED products are found to be noncompliant. UL Verified Mark program

We can provide product Verification in the form of the UL Verified Mark. UL Verification is an objective, science-based assessment that confirms the accuracy of marketing claims. The UL Verified Mark Program for laser/LED products was created in response to industry demand for an independent Verification of laser/LED radiation output level claims by a trusted test laboratory. With this program, manufacturers are able to claim that their laser/LED products emit lower levels of radiation to help alleviate concerns from users, retailers and others.

Our unique program measures optical radiation exposure from three categories of LED/laser products

CATEGORY A: LASER RADIATION ACCESSIBLE DURING OPERATION

Category Verification Claim Test Standards & Comments
A1 “Low Optical Radiation – Y% below Laser Class X Limit” Test Program/Criteria: IEC 60825-1 testing and classification with result at least 10% below Class 1 or 2 AEL. If pulsed, must be at least 10% below all applicable Class 1 or 2 AELs. X = 1 or 2; Y = 10% or higher number

CATEGORY B: LASER RADIATION NOT INTENDED TO BE ACCESSIBLE DURING OPERATION

B1 “No operator accessible laser radiation” Test Program/Criteria: IEC 60825-1 construction review and leakage radiation testing of enclosure resulting in no detectable levels of laser radiation externally.
B2 “Negligible operator accessible laser radiation – less than 10 µW laser power” Test Program/Criteria: IEC 60825-1 construction review and leakage radiation testing/classification of enclosure resulting in Class 1 laser radiation externally, with a power value below 10µW.
B3 “Leakage radiation – Y% below Laser Class 1 Limit” Test Program/Criteria: IEC 60825-1 construction review and leakage radiation testing/classification of enclosure with a result at least 10% below Class 1 AEL externally. If pulsed, must be at least 10% below all applicable Class 1 AELs. Y= 10% or higher number.

CATEGORY C: LED RADIATION ACCESSIBLE

C1 “No Photobiological LED Hazard” Test Program/Criteria: IEC 62471 testing and risk group determination with result below all applicable Exempt Risk Group limits.
C2 “Low Optical Radiation – Y% below LED Exempt Group Limit” Test Program/Criteria: IEC 62471 testing and risk group determination with result at least 10% below all applicable Exempt Risk Group limits. Y = 10% or higher number.
C3 “Low LED Blue Light – Y% Below Exempt Blue Light Risk Group Limit” Test Program/Criteria: IEC 62471 testing and confirmation that the result is at least 10% below the Blue Light Exempt Risk Group limit. Y= 10% or higher number.

For manufacturers, the UL Verified Mark can serve as a visible product differentiator and help build consumer trust around the safety of your laser/LED product. The Mark may also be helpful when retailers request third-party confirmation of the radiation levels emitted by your product before they will sell it.
