Zimbabwe Proposes Changes to Pre-Packaged Food Labeling Regulations

Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Health and Child Care has notified the World Trade Organization (WTO) of its ‘Proposed Food and Food Standards (Pre-packaged Food Labelling) Regulations SI 265 of 2002 Amendments.’

The notified document establishes the following proposed changes to the regulation on labeling for pre-packaged foods:

  • Declaration of the GMO content of foods
  • Changes to the best before dates
  • New Nutrient Reference Values (NRVs) for nutritional claims
  • Declaration of caffeine levels in energy and other soft drinks

It is proposed to be adopted on November 30, 2016 and enforced on January 2, 2017. Comments may be submitted until October 29, 2016.
