Northbrook, Illinois — March 21, 2022 — UL, a global safety science leader, announced today that Steven Margis, director of Conformity Assessment Programs at UL, received the Mukaidono Safety Achievement Award from the Institute of Global Safety Promotion.

The Mukaidono Safety Award was established in 2015 to honor the achievements and the dedication of Masao Mukaidono, professor emeritus at Meiji University, Tokyo, who made significant contributions to promote manufacturing industries’ safety globally. This award is presented annually to individuals and groups who have helped advance manufacturing safety in the field of industrial automation.

Margis won this award because of his contribution to building a global foundation to establish a new safety certification system. He took a leading role in the development and healthy operation of the IEC System for Conformity Assessment Schemes for Electrotechnical Equipment and Components (IECEE) Certification Body (CB) Scheme to facilitate international trade through the mutual acceptance of product test results. In addition, he engaged in developing “Safety in the Future,” a whitepaper published by the International Electrotechnical Commission in November 2021.

“I am honored to be recognized for my work in the field of global conformity assessment,” Margis said. “With recent technology innovation, the definition of safety is extending and not limited to fire and electrical safety, but to a wide range of themes such as electromagnetic compatibility, cybersecurity and functional safety. I will continue to work together with the standardization community to develop standards and associated conformity assessment solutions to address the ever-evolving risks and market opportunities.”

Hidehiko Yamajo, regional vice president of UL in Japan, said, “As a globally trusted business partner, UL works to solve our customers’ critical safety, security and sustainability challenges while also helping to achieve smooth global market access. We salute our colleague, Steven Margis, for receiving this prestigious award and applying his expertise to advance the field of international conformity assessment and standardization.”
