In response to ongoing innovation in the automotive lighting industry, UL Solutions’ lighting laboratory in Taiwan has recently expanded optoelectric testing capabilities to help global manufacturers evaluate their products and demonstrate compliance with applicable safety standards. As a global expert in lighting safety and performance testing and certification, UL Solutions has multiple laboratories worldwide that offer performance and reliability tests. We’re pleased to continue expanding our LED testing offerings at our lighting laboratory in Taiwan.
Expanded automotive-grade LED and VSCEL testing
The widespread adoption of LED lamps and vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) in automotive lighting design, as well as the rapid development of innovative technologies such as advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), continues to drive the importance of safety and reliability testing for automotive products. UL Solutions’ laboratory in Taiwan has enhanced its LASER/VCSEL equipment testing capabilities to meet the requirements of Automotive Electronics Council (AEC) Q102 standards expanding our support of the global market’s needs.
To accommodate diverse lighting products, our Taiwan laboratory introduced advanced measurement and testing equipment, including:
- 25 cm integrating sphere
- 10-watt photodiode
- Microsecond pulse power supply
- Thermoelectric (TE) cooler (-10°C to 85°C) used to test product properties
- I-V curve testing software
Automotive-grade LED and VCSEL testing capabilities at our lighting laboratory in Taiwan include:
Test item # | Stress | Test method |
B2 | Low-temperature operating life (LTOL) burn-in testing | JEDEC JESD22-A108 |
E1 | Pre- and post-stress electrical and photometric testing | AEC-Q102, section 2.3.7, and user specification or supplier’s standard specification |
G2 | Vibration variable frequency testing | Joint Electron Device Engineering Council (JEDEC) JESD22-JESD22-B103, Condition 1 |
G3 | Mechanical shock testing | JEDEC JESD22-B110 |
UL Solutions' global network of lighting laboratories and capabilities
Our global lighting laboratories offer automotive-grade LED testing to continuously meet diverse industry requirements derived from various applications, especially in high-end sectors such as automotive headlights, fog lights, tail lights and daytime running lights. We closely align UL Solutions expertise in safety science and global services with energy efficiency requirements and the requirements of lighting fixture, module and chip supply chains.
LED photobiological safety testing services
In addition to safety testing for automotive-grade LED products, we also offer photobiological safety testing for LED products employed in a broad range of industries.
LED radiation safety testing
With the expanding use and functionalities of LEDs, concerns regarding photobiological safety are on the rise. Standards such as American National Standards Institute (ANSI) RP-27 and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 62471 series are designed to mitigate the photobiological hazards associated with LEDs. UL Solutions can perform the necessary tests and evaluations to determine the product’s risk group classification, as defined in the applicable standards. We can evaluate various types of LED products, with applications ranging from barcode imaging to security cameras. Our reports can aid manufacturers in demonstrating compliance with LED radiation safety requirements.
Ultraviolet radiation safety testing
LEDs, lamps and lasers may emit ultraviolet (UV) radiation that can pose serious photobiological safety risks, potentially causing harm to the skin and eyes of individuals exposed to it. With the increasing number of UV sterilization products in the market today, it is crucial to measure and assess the levels of UV radiation emitted by these products. UL Solutions can determine the risk group classification of products by evaluating the photobiological safety of UV radiation and confirming that products do not exceed specified exposure limits.
Safety standards addressing potential hazards from UV radiation include the ANSI RP-27 series standards, occupational and environmental health threshold limit values set by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) and the IEC 62471 series of standards. We can evaluate ultraviolet radiation in accordance with these standards.
