NORTHBROOK, Ill. — Sept. 4, 2025 — UL Solutions (NYSE: ULS), a global leader in applied safety science, today announced its life cycle assessment (LCA) suite of services that help manufacturers and businesses worldwide meet the growing demand for environmental transparency and sustainability.
An LCA is a standardized methodology for evaluating the environmental impacts of a product or manufacturing process from start to finish. It looks at the potential impact of extracting raw materials, manufacturing, transport, use, and finally disposal, recycling or other options, such as reuse or refurbishment. It is a comprehensive analysis of a product’s potential environmental footprint that helps identify environmental hotspots, informs sustainable design choices and supports environmental management decisions.
As climate resiliency and environmental accountability become increasingly important to organizations globally to meet stakeholder demands and regulatory requirements, UL Solutions’ third-party LCA evaluations provide a comprehensive, independent assessment of a product’s potential environmental impact. These assessments, grounded in International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards, help organizations quantify and reduce their carbon footprint, optimize resource use, and make informed design and production decisions.
“Today’s consumers, regulators and stakeholders expect more than just promises about the environmental impact of products; they demand proof through systematic evaluations,” said Ranee Valles, director and general manager of product sustainability in the Retail and Consumer Products group at UL Solutions. “Our comprehensive life cycle assessment evaluations provide the scientific rigor and transparency needed to build trust and drive meaningful sustainability progress.”
UL Solutions’ LCA offerings include:
- Product category rule (PCR) development — Rules that support consistency across LCAs for a product type
- LCA creation and reporting for individual products, processes or full portfolios, which involves defining the goal and scope of the LCA and planning a systematic evaluation of the entire life cycle
- Hot spot analysis, which identifies specific areas in the product life cycle where there are environmental impacts and alternatives to enhance those areas
- Comparative LCAs to support public environmental claims, which are claims companies make regarding the environmental benefits or impact of their production processes or products
- Certification of environmental product declarations (EPDs), verification of product carbon footprint (PCF) claims and verification of reduction through EPD optimization or PCF reduction — EPDs provide a comprehensive overview of a product’s environmental performance across its entire life cycle, while PCFs show the total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of a product1
- Review of PCF claims against the World Business Council for Sustainable Development’s (WBCSD) Partnership for Carbon Transparency (PACT), GHG Protocol and ISO criteria, which are widely accepted guidelines and standards regarding environmental impact and transparency
These services support both voluntary and mandatory sustainability reporting, helping companies meet regulatory requirements, satisfy customer expectations and align with global frameworks such as the GHG Protocol and the WBCSD PACT.
