NORTHBROOK, Illinois – April 28, 2022 – UL, a global safety science leader, announced today that the Singapore site of GlobalFoundries® (GF), a semiconductor manufacturer, is the first semiconductor manufacturing facility in Southeast Asia to be validated to UL 2799, the Environmental Claim Validation Procedure (ECVP) for Zero Waste to Landfill.

UL’s Environmental Claim Validation program was designed to effectively measure and validate companies’ statements about their reduced and diverted waste. The validation process requires precision waste tracking and management. This UL landfill waste diversion validation program focuses on monitoring and measuring material flows that are not part of an organization’s final product.

As more organizations pursue zero waste, the science community has recognized that reduced waste also reduces carbon emissions. The benefits of operating a zero- or low-waste facility include decreasing costs associated with waste disposal, carbon emissions reduction and less reliance on limited landfill space.

“Managing waste is an important part of our efforts to increase the sustainability and efficiency of our operations, and we are pleased that our site in Singapore has achieved UL 2799 Zero Waste to Landfill Validation,” said Daniel W. Steele, senior director of Asia-Pacific Environmental, Health, Safety and Security at GF. “GlobalFoundries has a long track record of environmentally responsible manufacturing and operations, and we are committed to growing responsibly and minimizing our impact on the environment.”

According to Doug Lockard, vice president and general manager for the Retail and Consumer Products group at UL,  “Waste diversion can save resources, protect the environment and reflect corporate social responsibility. It can also help companies obtain economic benefits, by reducing production and operating costs, and enhance their reputation as more and more consumers and companies are taking action to protect the environment. Most importantly, it can also reduce corporate carbon emissions and help companies achieve their carbon neutrality goals. Waste diversion has become an indispensable and important part of a company's carbon journey, and UL is proud to support companies, including GlobalFoundries, as they take these steps.”

UL offers four landfill waste diversion claim validations to evaluate companies that handle waste in environmentally responsible and innovative ways from energy production via incineration to reuse, recycling and composting.
