UL and Standard-Tech Establish Preferred Partnership to Provide UL Safety Certification for Furniture in China

June 3, 2014

Chinese furniture manufacturers gain local access to UL Certification Mark, increasing North American furniture market access

Northbrook, IL June 3, 2014 - UL, a global safety science leader, announced today that it has established a preferred partnership with Standard-Tech to provide manufacturers with the ability to test to UL Safety Standard UL 962 for household and commercial furnishings in China.

Now, Chinese furniture and component manufacturers pursing certification to UL 962 to verify that furniture and component products meet electrical, flammability and personal injury safety requirements, do not need to ship products to North America for testing and certification.  Through a preferred partnership with Standard-Tech, Chinese manufacturers can certify household and commercial furniture and furnishings, including commercial displays, decorative furnishings, and motorized and powered furniture, at the company's facility in Guangzhou, China.

"We are pleased expand our preferred partnership with UL into furniture to increase Chinese manufacturers' access to the North American market," said Michael Xiao, General Manager, Standard-Tech.  "Standard-Tech has enjoyed a great partnership with UL on the lighting side, and we are expanding the relationship to now include furniture and components."

Achievement of the UL Certification Mark can result in faster acceptance of products for Chinese manufacturers who wish to sell into the North American market.  The majority of North American distributors or integrators ask for a third-party certification by UL to minimize the risks of non-conformity of products they import and to gain a higher acceptance rate by regulatory authorities.

"Chinese furniture and component manufacturers are a key player in the North American furniture market, and having local access to test their products to UL 962 will greatly expand their access to the

North American market," said Giuseppe Barisan, Director of Global Operations for UL's furniture division.  "We are pleased to offer these services through Standard-Tech with our preferred partnership."

Standard-Tech can now begin testing for customers who wish to certify to UL 962, the Standard for Household and Commercial Furnishings Safety Certification.
