LG Achieves Verification Mark for Artificial Intelligence Algorithm Reproducibility

LG Electronics receives a first-of-its-kind Marketing Claim Verification for AI algorithm reproducibility, designed by UL Solutions to help establish the accuracy of claims about an algorithm’s performance in AI-enabled products.

UL Solutions has issued the first Artificial Intelligence Verification Mark to LG. The certificate award ceremony was held in the presence of Todd Denison, SVP, global regions at UL Solutions, and Baek Seung-tae, executive vice president of the Living Appliance Business Division at LG Electronics on May 11, 2022.

Appliances enhanced by artificial intelligence (AI) offer significant sustainability, safety and ease-of-use benefits to consumers. Consequently, digitization is a growing focus in the appliances industry; Statista’s Smart Home Report 2021 predicts revenue to increase from $29.1 billion (USD) in 2020 to $71.1 billion (USD) by 2025.

Establishing the trustworthiness of AI-enhanced products is a very active area of research. While some standards have been developed and will continue to be developed to help guide the commercialization of AI-enhanced products, there remains a significant gap in the availability of practical solutions to help differentiate the many claims regarding AI in the marketplace.

Reproducibility is essential for determining the dependability of an algorithm used in appliances where that algorithm either provides critical functionality or is central to a marketing claim. The UL Marketing Claim Verification Program for Artificial Intelligence Algorithm Reproducibility involves an in-depth review of the algorithm building and deployment processes grounded in predictive modeling best practices. UL Solutions’ specific learnings strengthen confidence in the trustworthiness of a manufacturer’s AI reproducibility claims. This process is unique, as UL Solutions is given a view into the customer’s proprietary AI algorithm, allowing us to independently verify the reproducibility of its performance and marketing claims.

UL Solutions, an independent expert in science-backed product testing, assessed LG’s laundry products (FX23****, RD20**** and other 7 models), and was able to verify the reproducibility of the washing machine and clothes dryer’s AI algorithm performance and LG’s AI technology capability claim.
