UL, a global safety science leader, has recently issued ISO 26262:2018 automotive functional safety ASIL-D process certification to Geely Automobile Research Institute. A certificate awarding ceremony was held at Geely Automobile Research Institute in Ningbo City, Zhejiang Province. This is the first functional safety management process certificate issued by UL to Geely Automobile Research Institute in China.

Mr. Feng Hao, Global Vice President of UL and Managing Director for Mainland China and Hong Kong, Mr. Shi Jun, General Manager of UL Meihua Certification Co., Ltd., Mr. Ren Xiangfei, Vice President of Geely Automobile Research Institute, Mr. Fu Zhaohui, Director of Electrical and Electronics Center, and other relevant leaders from both sides attended the award ceremony.

This is the first ISO 26262:2018 automotive functional safety ASIL-D level functional safety management process certification for OEMs issued by UL to Geely Automobile Research Institute in China. It means that Geely Automobile Research Institute has reached a new height in the construction of functional safety process. As a global safety science leader this is an important milestone for UL and will benefit China’s automotive functional safety development and help Geely Group to enter the North American and global markets.

During the certification audit process, UL made a professional assessment of the relevant content based on its understanding of the applicable functional safety requirements. Based on Geely's actual experience in the functional safety development process of mass-produced models, the functional safety team of Geely Automobile Research Institute also made quick optimizations and improvements on the process, and handed over all deliverables in a shorter time frame.

As a result, the functional safety process of Geely Automobile Research Institute passed UL’s strict assessment. Demonstrating the commitment of UL’s functional safety certification team to helping Geely Automobile Research Institute’s functional safety team.

Mr. Feng Hao, Global Vice President of UL and Managing Director for Mainland China and Hong Kong, said at the award ceremony:

"Congratulations to Geely Automobile Research Institute for obtaining the ASIL D level functional safety management certificate issued by UL. This certificate proves that the functional safety process system of Geely Automobile Research Institute has passed a rigorous assessment and is fully established and compliant. It also means that a solid foundation has been laid for the compliance of Geely Automobile’s product development process, which will surely help Geely Group to enter the North American and global market. We also look forward to entering a new phase of comprehensive strategic cooperation between our two parties on this basis. I also wish Geely Auto, as an outstanding representative of China's automotive industry, an even more exceptional performance in the global automotive market!"

Mr. Ren Xiangfei, Vice President of Geely Automobile Research Institute, also said:

"Obtaining the certification is only the first step, as we will continually promote functional safety work in the future. The first priority in the era of smart cars is the safety of users and products. It is our hope that Geely Auto's products can provide safety guarantees to users across the country, become a benchmark for safety, and establish a brand image of functional safety. This certification has started a new chapter for Geely's subsequent safety features. We look forward to in-depth cooperation with UL in the future to jointly achieve world-class results."

The rapid development of various new automobile technologies has currently made people's travel easier, but all innovations must be based on "safety". The scope of vehicle safety has evolved from the active and passive safety of traditional vehicles to the functional safety of electrical and electronic systems, the expected functional safety of autonomous driving, the network security of Internet-connected vehicles, and the software security of software-defined vehicles. The safety frameworks and regulatory requirements are also becoming more complex.

In order to deal with these complex functional safety frameworks, UL experts around the world provide international standards-based, product and process-oriented training, advisory and certification services for customers in the automotive industry. With ISO 26262:2018 automotive functional safety ASIL-D process certification, customers can prove that the development process of their electrical and electronic systems complies with the requirements of ISO 26262:2018, thus providing their subsequent product development with a safety framework and process that can be followed to reduce the risk of entry into the international market.

UL has long been committed to providing comprehensive assessment, training and certification services for OEMs, autonomous driving technology companies and component suppliers.
