Get to know Sandhya Menon, operations leader within Consumer, Medical and Information Technologies, located at our Kingsland, Basingstoke, United Kingdom campus. Learn about Sandhya’s passion for a safer world and her 14-year career with UL Solutions, starting at entry-level engineer to now operations leader.

Can you share some more about your background?
I was born in Kerala, a southern state of India and after growing up in the Middle East I returned for my undergraduate degree. I have been with UL Solutions since completing my master’s degree 14 years ago.

I started as a lab engineer, testing absorption rates of radiation and waves from various technologies and progressed to a senior lab engineer role in just two years. After four years I moved into project management. Recently, I have taken on a leadership role in the audio team where I am responsible for a team of 25, something which I am immensely proud of.

Why is creating a safer world important to you?

UL Solutions is focused on sustainability and looking into the future. As a mother to two young children and a citizen of the world I believe it is all our responsibility to make the world a safer place and to leave it better than we found it.

Can you describe your typical work week?

I work as an operations leader on the radio team. My typical day involves ensuring all resources, technical or lab-based, are used to their full potential. It is also my job to make sure that everyone is happy and wants to show up and do their best for our customers.

What aspect of your role gives you a real sense of meaning and purpose?

Promoting women in STEM has always been important to me. I was the lead on the Women in Engineering wing of the IEEE when I was in University and have been able to continue my passion at ULS through our Business Resource Groups as well as coaching. I am currently mentoring a couple of female interns from other teams which has been a very meaningful experience for me. ULS treats everyone equally, and I have not felt held back at all. I feel very proud of what I have managed to achieve here and am excited for whatever comes next!

In what ways has UL Solutions supported your development and growth?

UL Solutions is not a company that holds people back. I have been on maternity leave twice and every time I have come back I have been able to develop my career, either through moving into a better role or being promoted. I have never felt like taking time away at ULS was something that could harm my career or progress. I have had many good mentors and guides, from local leadership to members of senior leadership, support, coach and champion me.

Can you describe a time someone has supported you in a meaningful way?

Throughout my journey at ULS, whenever I have found myself ready for a change, I have always found more senior members of the business have been there to help and support me, giving me the confidence I needed to take the next step. I have always found that speaking up about my ambitions and putting myself out there has been met with a positive reaction, which has grown my confidence as well as my career. My mentors have always encouraged me to achieve and take on new challenges, even when I was unsure of myself. People really do want you to succeed in your career here and I think my experiences really show this to be true.
