Artificial intelligence (AI) computing is increasing the amount of electricity that data centers require. UL Solutions has launched a certification program for medium-voltage solid-state power units, an emerging technology designed to deliver power more efficiently. These units convert medium-voltage alternating current (AC) from the electric grid directly into the lower-voltage direct current (DC) power used by data center systems.

Also known as medium-voltage solid-state transformers, these units perform a function similar to that of conventional transformers, but they use power electronics to convert and lower the voltage.

The new program is based on UL 2877, the Outline for Investigation for Power Supplies, Medium Voltage. It provides manufacturers with a defined process to demonstrate that eligible equipment meets safety requirements. The program supports key equipment for data centers transitioning from traditional 400-volt AC power systems to emerging 800-volt DC power systems.

Traditional systems can require electricity to pass through multiple conversion stages before reaching computing equipment. Each conversion can result in energy loss. Reducing the number of AC-to-DC conversion steps can simplify data center power systems.

The program addresses potential electrical and fire risks associated with equipment that handles large amounts of power. The certification framework covers electrical protection, insulation, grounding, enclosures, safety interlocks, wiring and product markings. Testing can evaluate how equipment performs under high temperatures, excessive electrical loads, voltage spikes and other conditions.

For manufacturers, certification provides an independent way to demonstrate that eligible products meet defined safety requirements. For data center operators and code authorities, certification can provide clearer information when evaluating new power technologies.
