Understanding UL 94 vertical flame ratings: What they mean for polymeric materials

UL 94, the Standard for Tests for Flammability of Plastic Materials for Parts in Devices and Appliances, is one of the most widely recognized standards for evaluating the flammability of plastic materials used in electrical, electronic and industrial applications. Through a series of small-scale laboratory tests, materials are assigned a flame classification that indicates how they behave when exposed to a controlled ignition source.

Depending on the test method, specimens are positioned either horizontally or vertically and exposed to a specified test flame under controlled conditions. The resulting classification is determined by observing factors such as burning duration, afterglow time, dripping behavior and whether burning particles ignite materials positioned below the specimen.

Among the most commonly referenced classifications are the vertical burning ratings V-0, V-1 and V-2, which indicate that a material self-extinguishes within a specified time after the ignition source is removed. These ratings also assess whether flaming drips are produced during testing.
