Joe Bablo, a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff (DMTS) in the William Henry Merrill Society at UL Solutions, plays a pivotal role in advancing safety innovations in EV charging technologies. His contributions to technical standards development for EV charging, including EV supply equipment, EV chargers and EV couplers, demonstrate his commitment to our mission of working for a safer world. Through his dedication and leadership, he has become a recognized authority in standards development, product certification and EV charging safety awareness, helping drive global advancements in safety and innovation throughout this fast-paced industry.
EV supply equipment standards and certification
Since the resurgence of EVs in 2008, Joseph has played a critical role in charging-related UL Standards at the national and international levels. As a principal engineering manager, he leads a team responsible for shaping the technical content for EV charging standards, energy storage standards and battery standards. Joe’s leadership in this field extends to his roles as convener for the IEC 62196 connector series and chair of Code-Making Panel 12 at the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). His team is also pioneering safety innovations in larger applications, such as megawatt charging, automatic connection devices, and power export equipment.
Standard and certification literacy and awareness
The rapid global adoption of EVs has highlighted the need for consistent communication of standard practices to help support safety as technology advances. Joe and his team oversee the communication of these vital standards across 130 countries, helping to ensure that EV charging equipment is connected to the grid and operated uniformly and securely worldwide. As thought leaders in EV charging, Joe and his team collaborate with governments, manufacturers and nongovernmental organizations to harmonize these standards, promoting safety and efficiency on a global scale.
“The decarbonization of transportation is essential for creating a sustainable future, and UL Solutions’ role is to help make that transition safe for the planet and its inhabitants.” – Joseph Bablo
