UL Signs Mutual Recognition Agreement with Mexican Standards (NOM) to Streamline Access to Mexican Marketplace

July 25, 2017

Mexico City, July 25, 2017 — UL, a global safety science organization, has concluded a Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) for product certification to Mexican Standards (NOM), in order to reduce time and cost to market for product access to the Mexican marketplace. Per the agreement, UL can now execute a Conformity Evaluation Process for manufacturers along with requested tests performed at UL or UL-approved labs outside of Mexico according to NOM/NMX standards.

This MRA covers the NOM-003-SCFI-2014 standard requirements for Electric Products – Safety Specifications, and the categories covered within the MRA, and published in the Diario Oficial de la Federación, are shown in the list below. Global manufacturers holding certification with UL can streamline market access for the following product certifications by completing testing in the country of manufacture:

Household Appliances                                         Power and Distribution Equipment

Electric Tools                                                        Electrical Installation Equipment

Previously, manufacturers from outside of Mexico were required to send samples to Mexican laboratories for testing in order to obtain local certification. Now importers and manufacturers have a more efficient option of working with a global service provider who can assist with testing and conformity evaluation in accordance with Mexico’s legal framework.

“This recognition supports UL´s strategy which is focused on expanding our operation in Latin America in order to strengthen our support for the region,” says Alvaro Theisen, general manager for UL in Latin America. “UL de Mexico´s MRA approval from the Mexican Authorities is the first agreement of this kind for the new NOM-003-SCFI standard, and this new agreement allows UL to offer our customers more flexibility when it comes to time and cost for the certification process to access the Mexican market.”
